Marriage and Family Therapists

Marriage and family therapists focus on relationship, marital, and family problems related to mental health. Marriage and family therapists work with couples, parents, children, siblings, etc. They specialize in the family dynamic and tackle interpersonal issues and relationships.

The training of a marriage and family therapist is much like that of other mental health professionals, requiring a master’s level education in mental health and clinical supervision hours, which arethen followed by a clinical exam.

Clinical Professional Counselors

Becoming a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) establishes an individual as an expert in the fields of mental health and psychotherapy in the United States. This professional designation signals that graduates met both the educational and clinical training requirements to establish a private practice or work at an organization that provides counseling services.

Much like the Marriage and Family Therapist, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor provides talk therapy to their clients, giving them alternative ways to view their existence, pointing out helpful ways to approach problems, and using expert techniques to treat their clientele in order to bring about change.

Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D. Or PsyD)

A clinical psychologist is a mental health professional who has received a doctoral degree. However, unless they have a medical degree as well as their doctorate in Psychology, they cannot prescribe medication.  Psychologists are mental health professionals who are trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders.

So, if a person wanted to have their child tested to understand more about their mental capacity, extent of their mental disorder, or to learn more about why their own mind differed from others, they might seek out a Psychologist who could then assess them using instruments which have been proven effective in measuring their abilities.

Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have received advanced training and education in mental health and psychiatric disorders. Psychiatrists typically focus on medication management by prescribing psychotropic medication. Psychiatrists will meet with patients on a monthly basis, but most do not offer counseling services.

Instead, you can expect to meet with a psychologist for your therapy and a psychiatrist for any medication. Psychiatrists can still provide traditional mental health treatment and talk therapy, and some do; but it is recommended that you speak with your psychiatrist directly if that is what you are seeking from your relationship with them.

Social Workers

Social workers work in a variety of settings, including mental health clinics, schools, child welfare and human service agencies, hospitals, settlement houses, community development corporations, and private practices.

Clinical social workers must also be licensed in the state in which they practice.
